Heavy lifters in the marine industry

Monitoring of vessels equipped for the transport of very heavy loads

  • Ballast tank monitoring for stability, with a fast response
  • Radar- based tank level measurement
Red heavy lifter

Heavy lift cargo vessels are used for the transport of extremely heavy cargoes that normal ships are not able to accommodate. These heavy lift vessels require comprehensive and accurate monitoring of ballast tanks to maintain safety during operations, and they have particularly powerful ballast pumps, to give a fast response time. The major requirement is for stability, despite the presence of a bulky, large load, often carried above deck.

The KROHNE tank level monitoring system CARGOMASTER® is designed for all tank monitoring, alarm and liquid cargo operations, including ballast tanks. Close to 1000 vessels have been equipped with cargo monitoring systems from KROHNE to date. The system includes radar level transmitter tank level and ullage measurement, and other tank instrumentation and high/low level alarms.

KROHNE EcoMATE™ electronic fuel management system and Coriolis mass flowmeters enables the crew and ship owner to keep track of and report on fuel consumption and corresponding emissions, in accordance with the new regulations from the European Union and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). EcoMATE™ also allows separate monitoring of any bunkering operations.

KROHNE also manufacture a wide range of electromagnetic flowmeters suitable for other flow instrumentation on board, such as in ballast water treatment systems, exhaust gas cleaners (scrubbers) water/oil separators or fresh water production systems.
