A floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) is typically moored at sea close to a subsea oilfield. It is often based on an oil tanker hulk, and is equipped for the separation and treatment of the crude oil, water and gas mixture that arrives on board via flexible pipelines attached to the sea bed wellheads.

The treated oil is stored in the cargo tanks in the ship, until offloading to a shuttle transfer tanker. Some of the treated gas is used as fuel for on-board power generation: the excess gas is either exported via a pipeline to shore or it can be re-injected back into the reservoir. The produced water from the mixture is treated and discharged overboard, or is re-injected into the reservoir. The FPSO has sufficient storage to carry the produced oil, until it can be offloaded to the shuttle tanker, and thus so the installation does not require a major pipeline to the shore.

The KROHNE cargo monitoring system CARGOMASTER® is designed for all tank monitoring, alarm and liquid cargo operations. The system includes KROHNE radar marine tank level transmitters for tank level and ullage measurement, and includes inert gas and vapour pressure sensors, as well as tank temperature sensors. Configurable or Independent high level and overfill alarm sensors can also be incorporated. Close to 1000 vessels have been equipped with cargo monitoring systems from KROHNE to date.
